Is laser eye surgery affordable for me?

Laser vision correction is an elective procedure, and is only rarely covered by medical insurance plans. However, the affordability of LVC has never been greater. Consider the cost of replacing your eyeglass frames and lenses or the repetitive costs of disposable contact lenses. With laser vision correction you can receive the greatest value: clear vision without glasses or contact lenses!

At Tennessee Valley Laser Center we recommend that you plan to be off work for at least one day following laser vision surgery. Although, it is not uncommon for patients to resume their normal work activity the very next day, your eyes will be light sensitive for the first 24 to 48 hours after surgery.

Once you become accustomed to the sound of the laser, anesthetic drops will be placed in your eye to numb it. In the laser room, you will be seated in a reclining chair the physician will position your head under the laser, and a retainer will be placed between your eyelids to gently hold them open during the treatment. A flap of tissue will be created on the front surface of your cornea using a highly sophisticated Intralase. You will then be asked to focus on a blinking red light while the laser rreshapes the cornea. The laser will treat your eye for less than one minute and your total time in the laser area will be about 10-15 minutes per eye. The flap will then be repositioned. After your laser treatment is complete, some drops and a protective clear plastic shield/goggle will be placed on your eyes for protection and comfort. While the actual procedure is painless due to the numbing drops, you may experience some slight irritation during the immediate post-operative period.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

With today’s sophisticated laser technology, nearly 99% of the population can be treated with LVC. However, there are some guidelines: you must be at least 18 years of age with healthy eyes and stable vision. The professionals at Tennessee Valley Laser Center can provide additional information and advice during a pre-operative laser vision consultation.

What kind of vision can I expect?

This depends largely on the amount of vision correction required. Most people require a low to moderate degree of laser vision correction that should result in vision similar to that with glasses or contact lenses. Vision is usually blurry in the first day after the LASIK procedure. It is expected that most patients undergoing LASIK should be able to legally drive without correction within the first day after having the surgery.

How does LASIK work?

LASIK is now the most common laser procedure used to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.  The IntraLase Method uses tiny, rapid pulses of laser light to create your corneal flap – instead of using a metal blade – during the first step of LASIK.  Each pulse of light passes through the top layers of your cornea and forms a microscopic bubble at a specific depth and position within your eye that is determined by the doctor.  The IntraLase laser moves back and forth across your eye, creating a uniform layer of bubbles just beneath your corneal surface.  Just prior to applying laser vision correction, the doctor creates your corneal flap by gently separating the tissue where these bubbles have formed.  The corneal flap is folded back and a VISX laser generates a cool beam of ultraviolet light to gently reshape the cornea and the flap is then closed.

LASIK is a very precise, effective and accurate procedure that is suitable not only for high degrees of nearsightedness but also for patients with low to moderate prescriptions. It can also be used to treat the small percentage of patients with very severe prescriptions. This procedure has changed the lives of over 1 million people all over the world.

LASIK is a procedure that greatly reduces your recovery time and decreases the chance of many other risks that were more common with RK and PRK. The procedure itself only takes a few minutes to complete and involves minimal discomfort.

What is Laser Vision Correction?

Laser vision correction is a simple procedure that uses the VISX StarS4IR laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the treatment, the laser’s cool beam of ultraviolet light removes a small amount of tissue, usually less than the thickness of a human hair. Short pulses of this cool laser light change the curvature of the cornea, allowing images to be more sharply focused on the retina.

  • ~ Michael Keeney, Knoxville Ice Bears

Michael Keeney, Knoxville Ice Bears"I am writing to express my satisfaction with my recent LASIK procedure at TVLC. Dr. Murchison and his staff were extremely helpful, informative and easy to work with during the entire procedure. I would highly recommend his services to anyone who is tired of their prescription eye wear. I no longer have to worry about "tired" dry eyes from contacts or finding my glasses. I simply wake up and go about my day. I would like to thank Dr. Murchison and his staff for their efforts."
